In the early 1950s, when Hungary was under the totalitarian regime of the Hungarian Labour Party, farmer József Pelikán receives an important position and moves up the Communist, not really understanding what is happening to him, and what special merits he is promoted for. Until one day, when asked to return the ’’favor,’’ with false testimony against a good friend, in a framed trial. Banned for ten years in Hungary, The Witness is considered one of the most important satires of communism in East European cinematography.
